ABOUT

ABOUT

The Byre at Warkworth was a dairy and cow byre, converted in 2016.  Set in its own enclosed garden in the grounds of the owners house, the property has been in the family's ownership for over a 100 years.

Situated approximately 1 mile from the centre of Warkworth, a pretty village and home to the wonderful English Heritage site of Warkworth Castle and historic "hermitage" accessible only by rowing boat.  Warkworth village has  independent retailers, shops, pubs and delicious eateries, a beautiful church and stone bridge over the river Coquet, along which is a dog friendly riverside walk.  The Byre is a ten minute walk from a stunning sandy beach and ideal as a base for coastal walks.  It sits on the  picturesque North Sea Coast & Castle cycle route which links 200 miles of continuous cycle path from Edinburgh to Newcastle upon Tyne.

The owners have used locally sourced materials and incorporated a nautical theme during the property's renovation.  It offers many original features, beams, flagstones etc., an eclectic mix of traditional style furnishings with vintage and modern items throughout.

Bi-fold  glass doors lead to the enclosed private courtyard as an entrance into the open plan lounge area and dining kitchen. The patio is beautifully planted and provides a private and relaxing seating area to enjoy the outside space for an alfresco breakfast or evening meal.

SEE & DO

THINGS TO DO

Coast & Castles

Northwards to Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh, you will find dramatic defensive castles perched on a spectacular coastline.  In between, gems like Craster with its quaint unspoilt harbour and the magnificent Howick garden, home to Earl Gray tea. The tea room at Howick is a must. No trip to the Byre would be complete without a pilgrimage to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home to St. Cuthbert and St Aidan where the famous Lindisfarne gospels were written.

Harbours & Marinas

Amble-by-the-Sea, one and a half miles from the Byre at Warkworth has developed tastefully with a regeneration of harbour and marina tailored to lovers of sea and seafood. The Boathouse and the Fish Shack are two of our favourite restaurants. Amble is a buzzing little town with shops and cafes and wonderful Saturday and Sunday markets selling everything from curios to crab claws Trips to view the bird life and seals in the sanctuary of Coquet Island leave from Amble during the summer months. There is a kayak school at the shore base trust near the Marina.

Cultural Sites

The Byre Warkworth is a short walk over the fifteenth century bridge to the historic village of Warkworth with its impressive castle the ancient seat of the Percy family. Steeped in history, the village has fabulous eateries. We live in Bertram's,named for Warkworth's famous hermit whose hermitage can be accessed by guided tour in a rowing boat! Warkworth has beautiful shops for that essential gift or just to treat yourself!
Warkworth's church nestled in the centre of the village dates from the eighth century. Warkworth show is held in August each year in the castle field.  We are less than thirty miles to the world heritage site of the Roman wall, the delights of Vindolanda Roman fort and exhibition centre, Housesteads and the picturesque  valley would constitute a wonderful day trip.

Towns & Cities

The historic town of Alnwick boasts a castle, seat of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The castle, second home to Hogwarts enthusiasts and Alnwick gardens with its glorious cascade and treehouse cannot be missed. Alnwick also has the famous barter books a magnet for book lovers of all ages. Alnwick has banks and large supermarkets for that essential stocking up of holiday provisions.

The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne is 46 minute drive away or you can hop on the train at Alnmouth station (5 minutes away) for the short 30 minute ride right in to the city centre, or head north to Edinburgh where an hours train ride will take you straight into the heart of Edinburgh.

Beaches and Biking

The Byre is ten minutes from a sandy beach which stretches in a golden crescent from Alnmouth to Amble. Directly at the rear of the Byre the cycle path (route N1) leads to a clinker road, follow this down to the beach for picnics and paddles. This is a coastal and riverside walkers paradise and a magnet for wildlife enthusiasts.
The dramatic & beautiful coast northwards includes the town of Alnmouth with its Art festival in June each year when houses fill with spectacular art work.
